Fire at Ctg warehouse

Probe committee formed

The devastating fire which was broke out on Friday at warehouses of a abandoned private owned Victoria Jute Mills at the city’s AK Khan gate in gutted valuables worth Taka several hundreds.

 However, 22 fire vehicles of eight units tamed the fire after eight hours of fanatic efforts. The reason behind the fire could not be known immediately. The fire was broke out at around 5pm on Friday and it was brought under control early Saturday. The jute mill, owned by Isphani Group was rent out to different companies including Pran-RFL, Uniliver and Rafique Enterprise as warehouses. The goods including, cotton, jute, electric equipment and plastic were kept in the warehouses; however, there was no fire safety facility, said Md Jashim Uddin, deputy director Fire Service and Civil Defence in Chattogram.

Meanwhile, Chattogram District Administration formed a five members probe body headed by additional deputy commissioner of Chattogram Md Mashdul Kabir over the incident and asked them to submit the report within seven-day.

Our Sylhet correspondent adds: in another incident, Kumargaon Power Plant in the city was gutted in a fire on Friday midnight. Firefighters rushed to the spot and took the situation under control after two-hour long effort.

Sylhet fire service station officer Shimul Muhammad Rafi said, some electric cables and wooden boxes worth Tk 100,000 were gutted in the fire.

The chief engineer (sales and distribution) of Sylhet Power Development Board Probir Day said, “The fire incident occurred from sparking in the joints of distribution

cables.”
