Hundred years old snake charmer game, locally known as Jhapan Khela, was held at Benipur village in Shailkupa upazila of Jhenidah on Monday.
According to the organising committee of the event, a total of 11 snake charmers took part in the game at Benipur High School ground involving over 50 poisonous snakes.
Pintu Hossain, a college student of Mirzapur village in Shailkupa upazila, said the game is very dangerous one and interesting as well. ‘Only brave men can participate in this game. For the first time I have watched the game. I have heard about it from my grandfather,’ he added. Snake charmer and winner of the sport Liton Biswas said their five generations have been involved in snake charming. “I have showed the game in Jessore, Kushtia, Meherpur, Chuadanga, Magura, Faridpur, Rajbari and 20 other districts. This is my profession. My five-member family depends on earning from it. If we can continue with the practice we will lead our life easily.’ Chief organiser and chairman of Kancherkol advocate Salauddin Jowardar Mamun said it is one of the traditional and famous games in the area. At least 15,000 people come from neighboring districts to see the game. Twenty-five years ago, villagers used to organise the game regularly in the area, but it is now irregular and has lost its past glory, he added.
