Members of Bangladesh coastguard, Bhola zone, arrested 55 fishermen from the River Meghna and Monpura area for catching hilsa fish defying a ban yesterday.
Coast guard commander Lt Mojahidul Islam said they conducted several drives in the River Meghna and in the coastal area of the Bay of Bengal from Monday night to yesterday morning. During the time, they apprehended 55 fishermen, seized 7 fishing trawlers, 150 kilogram of hilsa fish and about 20,000 metres of current nets from their possession.
Later, the fishermen were produced before an executive magistrate court that sentenced them from one to two years of imprisonment.
