The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has accused Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of trying to implicate Opposition parties in the killing of two foreigners to divert public attention from the truth.
“The way the PM has accused our party and leaders shows that there is no need to have any investigative agency or court in the country. Now, they (the government) will determine the accused and mete out punishment,” BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan told reporters at the party’s Naya Paltan headquarters yesterday.
Nazrul added that the government should find out the real perpetrators by carrying out a proper investigation into the twin murders.
Referring to the arrest of BNP leaders and activists in Bhola during the reorganisation process of the party, he alleged that it was apparent that the government had adopted a policy to curtail the activities of opposition parties. “We want to categorically know from the government whether they want others in the country to continue their politics or not,” he added.
The BNP leader also mentioned that many party leaders and activists in Bhola and Sandwip were sent to jail while appearing at the court to seek bail.
Nazrul expressed regret that a senior leader like Tariqul Islam, who is suffering from cardiac and kidney problems, was being denied a passport, although he was in urgent need of going abroad for treatment. “The government is hatching a conspiracy to kill the veteran leader,” he added.
He also demanded the release of detained BNP leaders, including standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and MK Anwar.
