Military Branch Chief of banned militant outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), Javed alias Taufiqul Islam (24), died in a self-engineered grenade explosion at Ananya Residential Area early morning Tuesday, 12 hours after his arrest in Chittagong.
“After gleaning information from Javed that grenades were kept there, police, along with Javed, raided the Oxygen-Kuwaish Road early morning Tuesday. At that time, Javed exploded a grenade, killing himself and injuring three other police men,” said Additional Police Commissioner (Crime & Operation), Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP), Devdas Bhattacharya. Javed was admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital around 5:30am but on-duty doctors declared him dead, added Devdas.
A textile engineer by profession, Javed, along with four accomplices i.e. Bulbul Ahamed (26), Md Sujan alias Babu (25), Mahabub (35) and Sohel alias Kajal (35) was arrested Monday evening from the ground floor of Hazi Nur Ahmed Tower on Azim Para Lalmia Contractor Road by Karnaphuli police station officers. The police said the group had around 12 to 14 JMB members. The police recovered nine hand grenades, one pistol, 115 rounds of bullets, 10 knives, bomb-making explosives, two bikes and two bicycles.
Additional Deputy Police Commissioner DB (North-South) Babul Akhter said that during Javed’s interrogation Monday night, he confessed that his accomplices kept grenades under a tree on the Oxygen-Kuwaish Road near Ananya Residential Area. “Our team went there with Javed to recover the weapons. Javed exploded a grenade which left him and three police men injured,” said Babul. The injured police men, sub-inspectors Md Elias, Liakat Ali, and Constable Faysal, received primary treatment from CMCH and were then sent to the police hospital.
In a press conference at CMP headquarters around 12pm on Tuesday, Additional Police Commissioner (Administration), CMP, AKM Shahidur Rahman, briefed the media on the incident.
According to the police, Javed hailed from Chittagong’s Mirsarai and was involved with JMB since 2011. He used to make grenades for the banned military outfit.
