An Islami Chhatra Shibir activist was arrested yesterday from Awatapara village under Ishwardi upazila of Pabna in a case filed over the murder attempt on Christian priest Luk Sarkar.
The arrestee, Obaidur Rahman, 22, of Awatapara village, is an activist of the local unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, according to police.
“We arrested Obaidur Rahman in connection with the case filed over the murder attempt on Luk Sarkar. We are also trying to arrest rest of the suspects involved in the incident,” said Biman Kumar Das, officer-in charge of Ishwardi Police Station.
Luk Sarkar, 52, a priest of Faith Bible Church in the upazila, suffered injuries when three unidentified youths tried to slit his throat at his house on Monday morning.
According to the family members of the priest, three youths aged between 20 and 30 came to Sarkar’s Schoolpara house on a motorbike around 9am on Monday and told him they wanted to know about Christianity.
All of a sudden, they got Sarkar pinned to his chair and tried to slit his throat with a knife. As the victim shouted for help, his family members and locals came to his rescue and found him injured. The attackers, however, managed to flee the spot leaving the motorbike they came riding. Later he was given treatment at a local hospital.
Sarkar filed a case with Ishwardi Police Station the same day alleging that unidentified miscreants attempted to murder him.
Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in the district, especially in Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant and Ishwardi Export Processing Zone areas where some foreigners have been staying, police said.
