Death-row war crimes convict and BNP Standing Committee Member Salauddin Quader Chowdhury will file a review petition with the Supreme Court seeking review of its earlier order that upheld the death penalty awarded to the BNP leader by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) for committing crimes against humanity during the War of Liberation.
Advocate Huzzatul Islam Alfesani, counsel for the BNP leader, told reporters yesterday that his client would file a review petition with the Supreme Court against its order. The review petition will be filed before the apex court by the October 15 deadline, Alfesani said.
The lawyer met Salauddin Quader Chowdhury at Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur and discussed with him about filing of the review petition.
Later he said that SQ Chowdhury has decided to file the review petition against the apx court verdict. Alfesani said his client took the decision after going through the complete verdict. Hopefully, the apex court will acquit Chowdhury from the charges after considering the review petition, he added. On Monday, Alfesani met with Salauddin’s family members and discussed the review petition issue. According to their decision, he went to Kashimpur central jail yesterday and held a half an hour meeting with Salauddin Quader Chowdhury after obtaining permission from the jail superintendent, said the counsel.
The Appellate Division on July 29 upheld the ICT verdict against Salauddin Quader Chowdhury for his crimes against humanity committed during the country’s Liberation War in 1971.
Later, the complete verdict against the death row convict was published on September 30.
The verdict allows SQ Chowdhury 15 days to file a review petition with the apex court, seeking reconsideration of its judgment. If the court rejects the petition, the convict will be left only with the option of seeking presidential clemency to save his life.
The International Crimes Tribunal awarded death penalty to SQ Chowdhury on four charges — involvement in the killing of Natun Chandra Singha, Awami League leader Mozaffar Ahmed and his son and committing genocide in Raozan of Chittagong.
