The parliamentary standing committee on Shipping Ministry yesterday suggested the ministry to take necessary steps for amending its old laws on an emergency basis to make the country’s river ports more active and maintain those smoothly, reports UNB. It also recommended engaging six dredgers round the clock for maintaining the full navigability of Mongla-Ghashiakhali channel in Bagerhat and gearing up its ongoing dredging works. The parliamentary watchdog came up with the suggestions at its 19th meeting, held at the Jatiya Sangsad with its chairman Maj (retd) Rafiqul Islam in the chair, said a Parliament Secretariat handout. At the meeting, the activities of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) were also discussed. The committee recommended the ministry to take necessary measures to procure a fresh dredger to continue dredging works in Chittagong Seaport. Committee members Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, Talukdar Abdul Khalek, Abdul Hyee, Nurul Islam Sujan, Habibar Rahman, M Abdul Latif, Ranajit Kumar Ray, Anwarul Azim (Anar) and Momotaz Begom attended the meeting.
