22 fishermen jailed for one yr in Barisal

The fishery department yesterday sentenced twenty-two fishermen to one year’s jail each for violating the ban on hilsha netting in Barisal. The 15-day ban against hilsa fishing was imposed on September 25 to boost hilsa resources by saving mother hilsa carrying eggs during lying season, said D. Waheduzaman, district fishery officer (hilsa).
D. Waheduzaman said the fishery department in assistance with the local administration and law enforcing agencies conducted a drive from Sunday night to Monday late morning and detained 22 fishermen along with fishing nets from the Kirtankhala, Sandhya, and Meghna rivers under different areas of Barisal city and district.
Among them, seven were sentenced to one year’s imprisonment each and 10 fined Tk2,000 each  by the mobile court led by executive magistrate Kalyan Chowdhury on Monday afternoon.
On other hand, another mobile court led by Jhumur Bala, Wazirpur upazila nirbahi officer, sentenced two fishermen to one year’s imprisonment and three others to one month’s jail each, the fishery (hilsa) officer said.
Hilsa fishing net worth Tk 20,000 and weighing 40 kilograms were seized and destroyed following an order of the court.
