International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) sent three war crimes accused of Noakhali to Dhaka Central Jail yesterday, a day after their arrests for alleged involvement in crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971. The three accused are Md Amir Ahammad, 70, Jaynal Abedin, 73, and Md Yusuf, 80, of Noakhali and Laxmipur. A three-member ICT bench led by its chairman Justice Anwarul Haque passed the order after the police produced the trio before the tribunal seeking its directive in this regard. The tribunal also fixed October 14 as the next date for hearing. Earlier, on Monday, the prosecution pressed charges against five war crimes suspects including the trio. Following a prosecution plea, the trio was arrested hours after the tribunal issued warrants of arrest for the five war crimes suspects on Monday.
Amir and Jaynal were arrested from their homes under Sudharam upazila while Yusuf was arrested in the evening from his house at Hajiganj in Ramgati of Laxmipur. The remaining two suspects, who are still are on the run, are Abul Kalam alias AKM Mansur, 67, and Md Abdul Quddus, 84. They both used to live at their respective villages under the erstwhile Sudharam Police Station.
During yesterday’s hearing, Prosecutor Zahid Imam told the tribunal that police have been trying to arrest the fugitive duo. The prosecution brought three charges against the five accused for committing crime against humanity including genocide and murders after abduction during the Liberation War. The first charge was brought against all the five men for committing genocide by killing over 100 people of Shripur and Sonapur villages under Sudharam on June 15, 1971. The second charge was brought against Amir, Kalam and Jaynal for abducting and killing freedom fighters, namely, Ali Ahmed and Abul Kalam of Paschim Karimpur and Devipur on September 13, 1971. The third charge was brought against Amir, Kalam and Yusuf for committing murders of nine villagers of Ramharitaluk and Devipur villages on September 11, 1971.
