Since the very initial match of the 2019 Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), much talk have been held around the wickets of the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) especially day’s first match more than other issues. The first matches of the last two days in Mirpur produced a couple of low-scoring affairs, in where the holders Rangpur Riders scored a paltry 98 (against Chittagong Vikings, who made 101-7 in 19.1 overs) and Sylhet Sixers made 127-8 (against Comilla Victorians, who put on 130-6 in 19.5 overs).
But Dhaka Dynamites silenced them all, who were vocal more about the wickets of the Home of Cricket for the BPL and its governing council, compiled 192/6-the highest total of the current BPL T20 Tournament till now-after their first match total of 189.
This time, it was Hazratullah Zazai, who laid the foundation of the big total for the BPL 2016 champions, tonked 57 after his opening match 78. This was his second back-to-back half centuries on his BPL debut appearance. He faced 36 balls to club his cameo 57, laden with five big sixes along with three boundaries.
About the surface, Hazratullah Zazai told at the post-match briefing that the wicket was different which was good enough for batting.
“Today was a different day and the wicket was lot good for batting,” said Hazratullah Zazai, who was named for the back-to-back ‘player of the match’ award for his jaw-dropping batting display.
“But it was just little bit difficult. So I just managed,” Zazai said while he was speaking at the post-match press conference at the media block of the SBNCS yesterday.
“The wicket was little difficult as the ball standing low,” he added.
This Afghan stroke-maker was not confirmed before the tournament that he could get chance to play for the team amid the crowd of the stalwart batsmen the likes of Ian Bell, Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell and Sunil Narine.
But he said that he became excited when the coach told him to be ready for the opening match of the Twenty20 tournament.
“I didn’t think that I’ll play the first match,” he said.
“But when the coach told, I’ll play in the first match and that time I became really excited. The team includes Bell, Pollard, Russell and Narine and when I heard about my playing that time I became so happy,” he added.
Even if Zazai’s idol is Chris Gayle, he does not copy his style of shots. He said that he just plays for himself and that gives him more confidence.
“Every tournament I went to play APL, T10 - I just tried to make it count,” he said, signing off.
Khulna Titans South Africa recruit all-rounder David Wiese said that batting is always tough to chase down 190-plus total whatever the wicket was.
“Today was a disappointment of all aspects,” said David Wiese, who though snared two wickets being outshone with bat.
