Oikyafront demands fresh election

Alliance plans three programmes
STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

The Jatiya Oikyafront yesterday adopted a plan for three programmes including organising a national dialogue, demanding a fresh election under a non-partisan neutral government. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Oikyafront steering committee, the highest policymaking body of the five-party alliance, at Dr Kamal Hossain's Bailey Road residence. The Oikyafront is, however, yet to decide when the planned dialogue will start. The two other programmes are filing of cases by Okiyafront candidates who faced a debacle in the December 30 parliamentary polls and visiting the areas affected during the elections.

Oikyafront spokeperson Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the move while briefing reporters after an hour-long meeting that began at 4:45pm. The Oikyafront took this new course of action after all of its candidates, except seven, were defeated comprehensively in the just-concluded national polls.

It claims that votes were “looted” with the help of the Election Commission (EC), police, and the administration. As part of the programme, Oikyafront leaders will visit Balaganj in Sylhet within a week, said Mirza Alamgir.

Early on, Mirza Alamgir, a veteran BNP leader, accused the EC of deceiving the people in the 11th parliamentary election. "The EC turned the elections into a farce by misusing the law enforcement agencies and administrative officials. It also deactivated the armed forces,” he said.

He demanded that immediate publication of centre-wise result sheets by the EC so that Oikyafront can file cases before the election tribunal. He also reiterated the demand for holding a fresh election under a non-partisan government.

Dr Kamal Hossain, who presided over the meeting, said the issue of a fresh election came up in the discussion.  The meeting was attended by JSD president ASM Abdur Rab, Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, Bangabir Kader Siddiqui, Subrata Chowdhury,, Mostafa Mohsin Montu, Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Jaglul Haider Afrik, Shahidullah Kaiser and others.
