ACC to investigate wealth of nat’l polls candidates

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) chairman, Iqbal Mahmood, has said that the commission will investigate the wealth of candidates in the recently concluded parliamentary polls on the basis of their asset statements submitted to the Election Commission (EC).

According to the statements, the incomes of several candidates have augmented miraculously in the last five years. “We’ve collected the asset statements of all the candidates. We're scrutinising them. We'll take action in case of any anomaly," said Mahmood. The ACC chief was while speaking to reporters in the city yesterday. Mahmood said people would eradication of corruption within the next couple of months.

In response to a query, the ACC chief said the commission would look into the allegations of corruption against the outgoing ministers.

He also said the commission would treat everyone equally. “We will maintain zero tolerance against corruption, especially in the financial sector. We won’t give any leeway to anyone. We won't consider whether a guilty person belongs to the ruling party or not. We'll take steps against anyone found corrupt,” he added.

In response to another query, the ACC chairman said the commission would monitor every sector. “Education, finance and health sectors are under special surveillance,” he added.

“We seek cooperation from all in eradicating corruption from society. We’d like to start our battle against corruption in the new year,” he said.

The ACC chief said that the commission is now more confident of removing corruption from the country. The the Hasina government is be determined to root out corruption. “We’ll do everything to implement the government’s pledge to eradicate corruption from the country,” he added.

“We'll continue our drive against irregularities in health, education and finance sectors. The ongoing drive conducted by the commission won’t stop,” he said.
