New govt rolls into action

Members of the newly formed Cabinet started their first day in office by paying tributes to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi yesterday morning. The Cabinet members, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also paid homage to martyrs of the Liberation War at the altar of the National Memorial at Savar. After that, they went to their respective ministries and ddivisions to take over charge.

Officials of different ministries, divisions and departments received the ministers, state ministers and deputy ministers with bouquets. Most of the new faces in the Cabinet entered their offices with their family members. They expressed their pledge to perform well and future plans regarding ministerial work

Talking to reporters at the planning ministry, finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said that they wanted to reform the banking sectors to speed up the economy. He expressed hope that the upcoming budget would be export-oriented and conducive to development and manpower.

Law minister Anisul Haque said that they will form a commission to bring back the killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. “It’s a very tough job to bring back those killers from different countries. But we're working on it,” he added. The law minister also expressed his desire to ensure justice for the people in keeping with the Constitution.

Talking to reporters, the minister for health and family welfare, Zahid Malek, said that he would put emphasis on the need to ensure qualitative health services. “It's a major challenge. We'll also  enact a health protection law,” he added.

Malek also said his ministry would establish a cancer hospital in each of the divisional headquarters across the country. “We’ll complete health service development works in all the medical colleges appoint 10,000 physicians,” he added.

The health minister further said that they will open a kidney department in all district-level hospitals and take steps to ensure health services in rural areas. “We’ll take steps to fulfil our electoral pledges in the health sector,” he added.

Newly appointed information minister Hasan Mahmud said he will take necessary steps to resolve any problem after receiving complaints from journalists. He was talking to the reporters at his Secretariat office yesterday after taking over charge of the information ministry.

He mentioned that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had taken the country forward. “Sheikh Hasina has helped flourish the mass media in Bangladesh. Besides, both online media and social communications media happened during the Awami League (AL)-led government,” he said.

The information minister said all the dreams projected in the AL electoral manifesto would be implemented. He, however, said that many online media outlets are creating confusion by spreading misinformation. “We’ll face them by taking assistance from you (journalists),” he added. Hasan Mahmud sought cooperation of the mass media, saying that the role of the media will be very important to implement the visions of the Sheikh Hasina-led government.

He also said massive development has been carried out in rural areas and so there is no shortage of food in the villages. After took over charge of the religious affairs ministry yesterday, Sheikh Md Abdullah, state minister for religious affairs, said that he will not tolerate any irregularities in his ministry and its departments.

“I too suffered seriously during perform my Hajj. So, I want to see fair management so that pilgrims can perform their Hajj smoothly,” he added.

Throwing a challenge, the newly state minister said: “I will try to implement the Prime Minister’s commitment at any cost.” He urged all ministry officials to perform their duties with utmost sincerity and honesty. Earlier, religious secretary Anisur Rahman welcomed the newly appointed state minister at the ministry.

Talking to reporters, after paying tributes to Bangabandhu by placing a wreath at his portrait in front of Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi yesterday, home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said that they will take stern action against those who will try to sabotage in the name of launching a movement in future. “We will ensure security for people to continue the country’s development,” he added.

The home minister pledged to establish a drug-free country to protect the talents and dreams of the young people. “The anti-drug operation is going on and we will be able to control it in near future,” he also said.

State minister for the public administration ministry, Farhad Hossain, told reporters that he wanted to establish a more efficient and professional civil bureaucracy. The Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has formed a 47-member Cabinet by inducting 32 new faces on January 7.
