The general point-to-point inflation rate in September 2015 increased slightly to 6.24 per cent from 6.17 per cent in August largely due to country-wide observance of the holy Eid-ul-Zuha, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal has said while releasing the monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) at NEC 2 in the capital after the ECNEC meeting yesterday.
Mustafa said the reason behind slight increase in inflation rate is comparatively increased buying during the holy season. He added that despite the slight increase, general inflation rate still remains within the fiscal target of 6.5 per cent. In September last year, the general point-to-point inflation rate was 6.83 per cent, he informed.
The stable exchange rate over the past six years has helped contain inflation within desired levels, Mustafa noted.
Average year-on-year inflation rate from October 2014 to September 2015 stands at 6.25 per cent while that from October 2013 to September 2014 stood at 7.22 per cent.
Non-food inflation as against food inflation showed an increase in September this year. Point-to-point food inflation at the national level stands at 5.92 per cent in September, a little lower than 6.06 per cent in August while non-food inflation is 6.73 per cent in September, up from 6.35 per cent in August.
General point-to-point inflation rate in urban areas is 6.96 per cent in September as against 6.94 per cent in August while in rural areas it is 5.86 per cent in September vis-à-vis 5.76 per cent in August.
In urban areas, food inflation decreases from 7.56 per cent in August to 7.47 per cent in September whereas non-food inflation increases from 6.26 per cent in August to 6.37 per cent in September.
In rural areas, food inflation declines to 5.26 per cent in September from 5.42 per cent in August while non-food inflation increases to 6.99 per cent in September from 6.41 per cent in August.
The CPI report says the national wage index rate, at 130.52, witnesses 7.20 per cent growth in September as against 7.17 per cent in August.
