Local Awami League leader Ruhul Amin has been expelled from the ruling party for his alleged involvement in the gang rape of a woman at Char Bagya village in Subarnachar Upazila.. Amin was the party's upazila unit publicity affairs secretary and a former union council member. The decision to expel him was taken at an emergency meeting on Friday night, said AL's Subarnachar Upazila unit President Omar Faruk. It was alleged that Amin's followers gang-raped a woman at his behest on the night of the general election on December 30. Police have arrested seven people, including Amin.
The victim's husband said a group of men had stormed their house in the early hours of Monday and tied up all the family members except his wife. They took her outside at gunpoint and violated her in turns. The men also threatened to kill them if they disclosed the incident to anyone, he said.
The victim was hospitalised the next day with the help of neighbours. A case was later filed against nine people over the incident. Our Correspondent adds: Lambasting the Sheikh Hasina government, the secretary-general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, yesterday said the Awami League (AL) has deprived the country’s people of their voting rights through state terrorism during the 11th parliamentary polls on December 30 last year.
He said, “The Awami League and the country’s administration have turned into public enemies by stealing votes in this election yet again. The incident of Subarnachar proved how and in which way the police and AL leaders have vandalised the people’s rights.”
Mirza Fakhrul came up with the observation while talking to journalists at the Noakhali General Hospital after visiting a woman who was gangraped after the election in the early hours on December 31. Later, he talked to the victim’s husband and handed over financial aid to her family members for treatment.
Oikyafront leaders, including ASM Abdur Rab and Mahmudur Rahman Manna, also claimed that the AL had adopted an anti-people stance.
Mirza Fakhrul also said the shame was not only of the victim but of the entire nation. The incident has jeopardised the democratic and basic rights and the freedom of expression, he observed. “The nation could not imagine such incidents. I think we are entering a dark era,” he added.
He urged the people of the country to come forward and resist such acts. He added that they had talked to the Election Commission (EC) to take measures to stop the violence. He alleged that criminals affiliated to the ruling AL had threatened the woman with dire consequences after she cast her vote for the candidate of her choice in defiance of their order.
Krishak Sramik Janata League president Kader Siddiki, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) president ASM Abdur Rab, BNP vice-chairman Mohammad Shahjahan, barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokan, Shahid Uddin Chowdhury, Annie Haleen Jarin Khan, Barkatullah Bulu, adviser Abdul Awel Mintu, Zainul Abedin Farque and Golam Haider were present, among others.
On Friday night, an AL leader, Ruhul Amin, was expelled from the party for his alleged involvement in the gangrape of the woman in Noakhali’s Subarnachar upazila. He was the publicity affairs secretary of the Subarnachar AL unit and a former union parishad (UP) member.
