PM orders legal action against Liton

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday directed the authorities concerned to take legal steps against her partys MP from Gaibandha-1, Manzurul Islam Liton, who is accused of shooting a 10-year-old boy recently. The PMs directive came at yesterdays meeting of the cabinet, a minister told The Independent. The government will not tolerate such misdeeds, he further quoted the premier as saying. Liton is possibly in hiding. The government, however, has cancelled the licences of his firearms. We will adopt a zero-tolerance policy against those who are tarnishing the image and achievements of the government, the minister added. Hasina also said that though Manzurul Islam Liton had played a key role against the mayhem by BNP-Jamaat in the past, it would not have any impact on the government in taking steps against him. According to the minister, Hasina informed her cabinet colleagues that the government was well-informed about those who wanted to destabilise the country by killing foreigners. At the same time, the PM added: Many Bangladeshis,
too, have been murdered abroad, but such incidents draw less attention. We had never issued red alerts for such killings, but influential countries issue red alert if even one of their citizens is killed here.
Meanwhile, National University (NU) yesterday removed Manjurul Islam Liton from the governing bodies of three colleges over the shooting incident.
The NU authority has withdrawn Manjurul Islam Liton from the governing bodies of Dhubni Kanchibari College, Sundarganj Mahila College
and Sundarganj DW College for his indiscriminate shooting that injured a child, according to a press release issued yesterday. Besides, the NU also removed Jatiya Party
lawmaker MA Hannan from Mymensingh from the managing committee of a college, according to the release. MA Hannan was withdrawn from the governing body of Kabi Nazrul College, Trishal, it added.
