A cold wave coupled with dense fog has made the life of people across the country miserable for the past one week. The elderly and children are the worst affected as they have started suffering from various cold-related diseases. According to the meteorological department, the temperature has dropped below 6°C in recent days, making it hard for people to move out, even during the daytime with dense fog reducing visibility. At present, a mild to moderate cold wave is sweeping over Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions and the regions of Tangail, Madaripur, Gopalgonj, Satkhira, Jessore, Chuadanga and Kushtia.
The country’s minimum temperature was recorded in Panchagarh district in the last week, with Tetulia recording the lowest temperature of the season at 5.1°C on December 31.
Tetulia also recorded the minimum temperature in the country yesterday with the mercury hovering at 8°C, up from Friday’s 5.9°C.
Rahidul Islam, an officer at Tetulia meteorological office, said, “We expect this spell of cold wave to continue.”
Meanwhile, lack of warm clothes has compounded the problem for poor people in Panchagarh district. “We are trying to distribute warm clothes among these people,” said Touhidul Islam, mayor of Panchagarh municipality.
“We have distributed some 24,000 blankets so far. We have written to the ministry concerned to provide more warm clothes for the poor people,” said Sabina Yasmin, deputy commissioner of Panchagarh district. According to Met office forecast, there will be moderate to thick fog from midnight to morning across the country, and it may persist at some places during day time as well.
According to sources at Adhunik Sadar Hospital in Panchagarh, more than 350 people have received treatment for cold-related diseases in the past one week.
The scene is similar in Chuadanga with civil surgeon Dr Khairul Alam informing that the number of patients affected with pneumonia, cough and diarrhoea has gone up in the past few days.
