Cricketer Shahadat Hossain was sent to jail after he surrendered to a Dhaka court yesterday in a case filed for torturing an 11-year-old domestic help.
Metropolitan Magistrate Md Yusuf Hossain passed the order after the cricketer surrendered to his court and filed a bail petition. The court also rejected the bail plea.
Shahadat surrendered before the court after police arrested his wife, Nrittya Shahadat, from one of her relatives’ house at Malibagh in the capital on Sunday.
Later in the day, the police produced Nrittya before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Yunus Khan and sought remand for her. In response to the remand plea, the court allowed the police to interrogate Nrittya at jail gate for three days within five working days. On September 6, the domestic help, 11-year-old Mahfuza Akhter Happy, brought the allegation of torture by Shahadat and his wife. Later, a case was filed against the couple under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act with Mirpur Police Station.
Following the filing of the case, Bangladesh Cricket Board temporarily suspended Shahadat on September 13.
