Two garments factory workers were killed after a bus ran over them in Dhaka’s Malibagh area yesterday.Witnesses said the two victims were crossing a road in front of Abul Hotel on DIT road at Malibagh Chowdhuripara when a speeding bus of ‘Suprabhat Paribahan’ hit them around 1.30 pm. The bus was going from Sadarghat to Gazipur. While Mim Akhter (16) died on the spot, the other victim, Nahid Parvin Poly (22), succumbed to her injuries on the way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

The two worked for MH Garments, police said. Following the accident, the victims’ fellow workers blocked the Malibagh-Rampura road for around five hours, vandalised nearly 50 buses and also torched some of them. However, the situation came to normalcy around 6.30pm while there was a power cut in the neighbouring areas during the demonstration.

The agitators claimed that they wanted to stage a peaceful demonstration, but police beat them. This had enraged them to vandalise the buses. More than 100 policemen and some armed personnel carriers (Sajoajan) were deployed to bring to the situation under control. Later, DCP (Tejgaon) Biplob Kumar Sarker reached the spot. “I want to assure all the workers that everyone behind the accident, including the driver of the bus, will receive the highest punishment,” he said.

The OC of Hatirjheel police station, Abu Md Fazlul Karim, said police have seized the bus and arrested the driver. “No case has been filed in this regard as yet. Some buses were vandalised, but we brought the situation under control by 7pm,” he added.
