JP decision on being opposition today

SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT, Dhaka
JP decision on being opposition today

HM Ershad-led Jatiya Party (JP) will today  decide  on acting as the main opposition in the 11th Parliament. The party has also expressed dissatisfaction with the recently concluded polls, saying that it should have received more seats. “The JP is not satisfied with the results. We should have won more seats,” said JP secretary general Mashiur Rahman Ranga. He was talking to reporters at the party chairman’s Banani political office in the city yesterday.

According to Ranga, a joint meeting with newly elected JP lawmakers and presidium members will be held on Wednesday at the Banani party office at 11am. The decision on whether to act as the main opposition will be taken at that meeting. The JP secretary general said the matter will also be discussed with the AL-led Grand Alliance. “There should not be any constitutional problem. The final decision will be taken after a meeting between JP presidium members and the Grand Alliance,” he added.

The Awami League-led Grand Alliance had promised to leave 30 seats for the JP in the recently concluded polls, he said.  “But it left only 24 seats for us. We have won only in 22 constituencies. Leaders and activists of the party were repressed during the election and many agents ousted forcefully from the polling stations,” he added.

The leaders who misguided the party chairman should get punishment, he said. “The party will survive if we ensure democracy inside the party. We should maintain discipline in the field of politics,” he added.

“I will talk to the party chairman that none should be expelled from the party upon mere excuses. It hampers the party and tarnishes its image. I was expelled four times from the party,” the JP secretary genral said.

The JP is now the second largest strong political party in the country, he said, adding that they should work to make the JP as a democratic party in the days to come.

“It would be our first and foremost duty to make the party more stronger. We have to take preparation from now on so that the JP could assume the state power in the near future,” the JP secretary general said.

JP presidium member SM Faisal Chisti, presidium member Masuda M Rashid Chowdhury, vice-chairman Raushan Ara Mannan, Alamgir Sikder Loton, Bahauddin Babul, Nurul Islam Nuru and Sechcha Sebok party general secretary Belal Hossain, among others, were present during the discussion.
