Palli Kabi Jasimuddin’s 116th birth anniv was observed

UNB, Faridpur

The 116th birth anniversary of famous poet and litterateur Jasimuddin, popularly known as ‘Palli Kabi’, was observed in Faridpur yesterday.

The poet was born on this day of 1903 in his maternal uncle’s house in Tambulkhana village in Faridpur district.

As part of the celebration, Deputy Commissioner Begum Umme Salma Tanjia, also the president of Jasim Foundation, along with superintendent of district police Md Jakir Hossain Khan paid floral tributes to the poet’s graveyard at Ambikapur.

Later, people from all walks of life and members of different cultural and social organisations paid their respect to the poet.

Following it, a discussion meeting and a doa mahfil were held at the yard of the poet’s house.

Jasimuddin’s ageless creation ‘Naksi Kanthar Math’ translated in foreign languages.

Besides he is also the father of many remarkable writings like Sojan Badiyar Ghat, Rangila Nayer Majhi, Matir Kanna, Suchayani ,Beder Meye, Pallibadhu , Thakur Badir Abinay , Dalim Kumar etc.

When he was still a university student, his poem ‘Kabar’ (Grave) was included in school textbooks.

He is the key figure for the revivals of pastoral literature in Bengal during the 20th century.

A versatile writer, Jasimuddin wrote poems, ballads, songs, dramas, novel, stories, memoirs, travelogues, etc.

Man killed over land dispute

UNB, Moulvibazar

A man was killed in a clash with his rivals over a piece of land in the district's Juri Upazila yesterday.

Police said the victim, 53-year-old Taher Ali of Kalinagar village, had a longstanding land dispute with his neighbour Chan Mia.

Two groups, led by Taher and Chan, tried to sow paddy in the disputed land in the afternoon, triggering a clash, said Jahangir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Juri Police Station.

They fought with sharp weapons and sticks, leaving at least six to seven people injured, including Taher. He was taken to a local hospital but doctors pronounced him dead.

Three people had been detained for interrogation over the man's death, the OC said.

College student shot in Jashore

A college student was shot by unidentified assailants in Jashore early yesterday.

The victim, Sajib Hasan Sujon, 22, is a second-year management student at Uposhohor College.

Police said Sajib and his friends had gathered for a picnic at Dhaka Road when they were attacked by a group of 10-12 men for yet unclear reasons. The assailants fired on them, leaving the student injured.

He was taken to Jashore General Hospital.

Sub-Inspector Faruk, the Uposhohor police camp in-charge, said they were conducting a drive to arrest the perpetrators.

Massive schemes taken to boost Boro cultivation in Narsingdi

The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) has aken a massive programme for boosting the cultivation of Boro paddy at six upazilas in the district this season.

According to DAE sources, a total of 55,561 hectares of land will be brought under Boro paddy cultivation in the district this season.

Of the total land, 54,600 hectares of land would be brought under hybrid, 618 under High Yielding Variety (HYV) and 343 hectares under local varieties of paddy.

Shovan Kamur Dhar, deputy director of DAE, told BSS that there is no shortage of Boro seedlings in the district.

He said farmers of the district have already started plantation of Boro seedlings in different areas of the district and about 20% of land have been cultivated in the district so far. He said the cultivation would be continued till the 2nd week of February.

The deputy director said if there is no weather hazards over 250,000 tonnes of Boro paddy would be produced in the district this season.

He said the local DAE provided the farmers with logistic support including seeds and fertilizers.
