Awami League-led Grand Alliance candidates were declared elected in 17 constituencies while Dr Kamal-led Jatiya Oikyafront, of which BNP is the main component, came out successful in two seats under Sylhet division in the general national election held on Sunday. Of the Grand Alliance, Awami League got 16 seats and its main ally Jatiya Party won one. In Moulvibazar-2 constituency, Jatiya Oikyafront candidate Sultan Mohammad Monsur Ahmed defeated Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh contestant MM Shaheen and Oikyafront candidate Mukabbir Khan defeated individual candidate Muhibur Rahman by 38964 votes in Sylhet-2 constituency.
Awami League candidate for Sylhet 1, Muhith's younger brother Dr AK Abdul Momen defeated BNP candidate Khandakar Abdul Muktadir by 174845 votes, AL candidate for Sylhet-3 constituency Mahmud Us Samad Chowdhury defeated BNP contestant Shafi Chowdhury by 93000 votes,Sylhet-4 constituency AL candidate Imran Ahmed defeated BNP contestant Dildar Hussen Selim by 13019 votes, Sylhet-5 AL candidate Hafiz Ahmed Mojumdar defeated Oikyafront candidate Ubaidullah Faruq by 93299 votes and AL candidate from Sylhet-6 Nurul Islam Nahid defeated BNP candidate Foysal Ahmed Chowdhury by 87926 votes.
AL candidates Shahab Uddin won from Moulvibazar-1, Nesar Ahmed from Moulvibazar-3 and Abdus Shaheed from Moulvibazar-4 constituencies.
In Sunamganj, AL candidates Muajjem Hussen Ratan from Sunamganj-1, Joya Sengupta, from Sunamganj-2, MA Mannan from Sunamganj-3, Pir Fozlur Rahman from Sunamganj-4 and Muhibur Rahman Manik from Sunamganj-5 constituency won the election.
In Habiganj, AL candidates Milad Gazi from Habiganj-1, Advocate Abdul Majid Khan from Habiganj-2, Advocate Abu Jahir from Habiganj-3 and Advocate Mahbub Ali from Habiganj-4 constituencies won the election.
