They defy age to cast their votes

MUHAMMAD YEASIN, Dhaka
They defy age to cast their votes

Motahar Hossain, 90, is suffering from many diseases including asthma and old-age complications. But all that could not not prevent him from going to the voting centre and cast his vote. Motahar Hossain came to the Khilgaon Model College centre with the help of his grandson, Sadman Nur Saim. Having cast his vote, he told this correspondent that he had come to vote in order to fulfil his moral obligation.

“I have been casting my vote for a long time. I gave my first vote during the Pakistan period, under General Ayub Khan’s regime. Later, I cast my vote for Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Since then I have been casting my vote in every election,” said Motahar Hossain, who was unable to speak clearly.

Comparing this election with some previous ones, the ageing Motahar said, “Earlier, there used to be long line during poll time. We had to wait in the queue for hours to cast our vote. But, today, there is no line. I have cast my vote peacefully within a short time. I am happy to have cast my vote.”

Abadur Rahman, 90, also came to the Khilgaon Model College center to cast his vote.

“Maybe this is my last vote. I may not be able to come to a voting centre in future. Despite having difficulties in moving, I have come to vote because this may the last time I would be voting,” Rahman said.

Rahman came to the voting center with the help of his daughter, Fatematul Jannat Shiuly, 55.   Shiuly said that her father came to the voting centre to fulfil his desire to cast his vote, possibly for the last time. “My father said that he would not be able to vote in future, as he is suffering from several diseases including heart ailements, asthma and old-age complications. My father hopes that Bangladesh would be a peaceful and developed country in future,” she said. While visiting some centre in Jatrabari, Mugda, Vashavo, Khilgaon, Shantinagar, Motijheel and the Dhaka university area, this correspondent found many elderly people at the voting centres, waiting to caste their votes.
