Young voters want peace in country

Ismat Jahan, 20, came to the Habibullah Bahar University College polling centre to cast her vote for the first time. After casting her vote at 12.30pm, she came out all smiles. “I am very happy. I have voted for the first time. I want peace to prevail in the country,” she said. Like her, a number of first-time voters came out spontaneously to cast their votes at various polling centres.

Tasnim Chowdhury, 19, cast her vote for the first time at the Habibullah Bahar University College polling center. “I was rather apprehensive about the election environment before leaving home. But the atmosphere is peaceful. I am excited to have successfully cast my vote,” she said. Sadman Nur Saim, 21, came along with his grandfather to cast his vote at the Khilgaon Model College polling center. He said he was happy after casting his vote for the first time.

“But the absence of a queue in front of the polling booth was really  surprising. It seemed no polling was going on in the country!” he added. “We want a peaceful Bangladesh. We don’t want to see any violence, intimidation and extortion during the election,” he said.

Israkh Ahmed, another young voter, said that he cast his vote for the first time at the BTCL Ideal School and College polling booth in Moghbazar area. “I came all the way from Australia to cast my vote. I want to see peace prevailing in the country,” he added. Despite the spontaneous participation of young voters in the polls, no queues could be seen outside the polling booths, except in one or two vases, in the Dhaka-5, 8 and 9 constituencies.
