2 more medical universities to be established

The cabinet yesterday approved the drafts of the Chittagong Medical University Act, 2015 and the Rajshahi Medical University Act, 2015 to establish two more medical universities in the country, reports UNB. The approval was given at the regular weekly meeting of the Cabinet held at Bangladesh Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair. The aim of the universities, to be established in Chittagong and Rajshahi, is to create more specialist medical practitioner with a view to improve the countrys healthcare services. After the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Muhammad Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan briefed reporters. He said all the medical colleges in Chittagong and Rajshahi, including the existing Chittagong Medical College (CMC) and Rajshahi Medical College (RMC), will be affiliated with the new universities.
The Cabinet Secretary said postgraduate courses will be taught in both the universities while there will be graduation courses on nursing in both the universities. Bhuiyan said the Cabinet on March 23 this year had given approval in principle to the drafts of the Acts which were placed before todays cabinet meeting after necessary amendments and vetting from the Ministry of Law. As per earlier division of the Cabinet, the universities will be autonomous in terms of administrative and financial management.
The two universities will have Syndicate, Academic Council, Faculty, Deans Committee, Curriculum Committee, Board of Advanced Studies, Finance Committee, Planning and Development Committee and Discipline Committee, among others.
The president of the country will be the chancellor of the universities and he/she will appoint a vice-chancellor from the university teachers or any experienced academic person of medical education under some conditions through a gazette notification.
The Cabinet also approved a proposal of the Finance Division to promulgate an Ordinance on Money Laundering Prevention (Amendment) Act, 2015. The cabinet secretary said the cabinet approved the proposal considering urgency of the Act as Parliament is not now in its session. In this connection, he said, the Cabinet observed that the issue of money laundering is monitored and evaluated internationally and regionally. Besides, an International Monitoring and Evaluation Group Asia Pacific Group on Money Laundering would visit Bangladesh on October next when the government would present its initiative in this regard hoping to be visible by that time.
