Bullet-hit body recovered

UNB, Laxmipur

Police recovered the bullet-hit body of a young man from a ditch behind Boralia Primary School polling centre in sadar upazila on Saturday night.

The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately, said Abul Kalam Azad, officer-in-charge of Chandraganj Police Station.

The bullet body was sent to sadar hospital morgue for an autopsy, said the OC.

Meanwhile, locals said a gunfight between two groups took place in the area around 10:30 pm.

Bridge over Charalkatha River yet to be complete

As a bridge over the Charalkatha river, at Bera Danga point in Saramjani union of Sadar upazila in Niphamari district, has not yet been completed, more than 40,000 people are facing severe problems in crossing the river.

 It is learnt from sources concerned that Tk. 12,69,72,000 were allotted for construction of the 252-metre bridge. The construction work began on February 2, 2017, and was scheduled to be completed on June 28, 2018.

 Rita Begum, Sonali Begum, Gita Rani and Minara Begum, all students, told this correspondent that for want of a bridge they have to cross the river in small boats in the rainy season to go to school.

 When this correspondent contacted the executive engineer of the LGED, Md Belal Hossain, he said: "The contractor sought another year for completing the construction work, to which I agreed. The bridge will be completed within the extended time."

5 kg gunpowder recovered

UNB, Chapainawabganj

Members of Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) recovered 5.8 kilograms of gunpowder from Shampur in Shibganj upazila on Saturday noon.

Acting on a tipped-off, a patrol team of BGB-53 battalion from Wahedpur border outpost raided Shampur field area and chased a youth around 2 pm, said BGB-53 Commander Sazzad Sarwar, PSC.

Later, the team recovered a bag full of gunpowder, he added.

The recovered gun powder was handed over to Shibganj Police Station.

Mashrafe’s wife donates          Tk 1 lakh to late cop’s wife

UNB, Narail

Sumona Haque, wife of national cricket captain and Awami League Narail-2 candidate Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, donated Tk one lakh for the treatment of late police officer’s wife Rabeya yesterday noon.

Sumona went to Sadar Hospital to meet Rabeya, wife of Sub-inspector Md Moniruzzaman Mintu, and her newborn daughter in the noon and handed over the money. The mother has another child Tanha, 8.

The police officer died of sudden heart attack while performing duty on December 27. Meanwhile, Jasim Uddin (PPM), superintendent of Narail Police, also donated Tk 70,000 and Tk 10,000 on behalf of the deputy commissioner for the later police officer’s treatment.

Arms, ammo seized in C’nawabganj

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered a foreign made pistol, a magazine and seven rounds of bullet from Tarapur area under Shibganj upazila of the district early yesterday.

BGB said acting on detective information, a patrol team of 53 BGB battalion from Shingnagar border outpost raided on the area around 4-15 am, intercepting one person but he fled away leaving a bag.

After searching the bag, BGB found the arms and ammunition.

The seized arms and ammunitions were deposited to Shibganj Police Station.
