A newly constructed bridge on the Taltola river of Dirgha union under Nazirpur upazila has been opened to traffic.
The bridge will benefit the people of three unions—Deulbari, Kalarodania and Malikhali—of Nazirpur upazila and those living in the adjacent Nesarabad upazila.
Now, the farmers of those areas will be able to send their vegetables easily to different parts of the country.
Zakir Hossain Mia, an engineer of the LGED department, said the construction of the bridge on the Nazirpur-Boithakata road had begun on February 27, 2012. The bridge is 360 metres long and 8.4 metres wide. The construction cost has been Tk. 37 core.
Sanjeeb Kumar Roy, assistant teacher of Dirgha Academy School in Nazirpur upazila, said: “We are happy to know that the bridge has been opened. Earlier, we could cross the river only by a boat. Crossing the river was risky in bad weather. There had been several boat accidents.”
Gafur Mia, president of the Boithakata Bazaar Traders Association, said “The floating haats of Nazirpur upazila and the adjacent upazila of Nesarabad (Swarupkathi) are quite famous. People from various parts of the country come here to see them. Huge quantities of vegetables are produced in this area. But, for decades, farmers were forced to sell their vegetables cheaply in the floating wholesale market because of poor transport links."
“Now, with the opening of this bridge, they will be able to sell their vegetables in different markets and get a fair price,” he added.
Hasanat Dalim, chairman of the Kalardoania union parishad, said the new bridge will help people travel more easily to other parts of the country.
He added that the bridge would play an important role in the economic development of the region.
