Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan yesterday said the government will procure 20 dredgers at a cost of Tk 2048 crore for improving navigability of rivers across the country, reports BSS.
"Presently, Tk 1150 crore worth dredging works are ongoing in 53 waterways of the country," he said while inaugurating dredging work in the Brahmaputra River at Langalbandh of Naraynganj, an official handout said yesterday.
Noting that the present government had procured 14 dredgers during its previous term, the minister said the country's river are getting back lives due to massive dredging work around the country.
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) will dredge two kilometre of the Brahmaputra River from Langalbandh to Nayaghat at a cost of Taka six crore.
The dredging work will help the Hindu community to perform their religious rituals at Langalbandh.
Local Member of Parliament AKM Selim Osman also spoke on the occasion.
