The alleged shooting of a 10-year old boy Saurav Mia by the member of parliament (MP) of Gaibandha-1 constituency, Manzurul Islam Liton, on Friday morning is an utterly contemptible act, to say the least. The district administration has cancelled the licenses of Liton’s two firearms surrendered through his brother-in-law. Notably, a section of local Awami League leaders and activists themselves issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the authorities to arrest the delinquent MP.
According to locals as well as frequent media reports, Liton has a background of objectionable and unseemly behaviour shown towards the common people of his constituency. He is also alleged to be a drug addict. He was linked to beating up a magistrate last year. It is important to realize that the election through which the incumbent government came to power was a Constitutional necessity. But since it lacked participation by a major political party, people’s expectations are that members of the incumbent parliament would try to gain acceptability through expressions of their integrity and correct behaviour. But clearly such expectations are frustrated in cases of atrocious conduct by the likes of Liton. It may not be an overstatement to say at least a few MPs of the present parliament are behaving in a way that brings no shine to its image. Their wrongdoings have created an embarrassing situation for the party and the government. A few months back, two people were shot dead by the derailed son of an influential female MP in the capital. The killer is now in jail.
The Prime Minister has sounded a stern warning against those involved in nefarious activities in her party. The Prime Minister’s pledges have been kept also in many cases. But clearly there is need to ensure that none is spared unfailingly in each and every case of persons in positions of high responsibility acting in a lowly or unacceptable manner not befitting their positions. There is no alternative to flushing out the undesirable elements from the ruling party however powerful they may be.
Over the years and under the tenure successive governments, the quality of the public representatives has deteriorated. Money and muscle power have replaced merit and insight. In the absence of promoting truly competent candidates many low-graders became public representatives. The MPs are the highest administrators and political mentors in their respective constituencies. If they themselves are tainted with gross misdeeds, where will the people go ? All the achievements of the government will come to naught if the elements that besmirch the image of the government are not reined in when there is still time .
