Obstruction to voting rights to kill democracy: Moudud
UNB, Noakhali

BNP standing committee member and party contestant from Noakhali-5 constituency Barrister Moudud Ahmed on Wednesday said democracy will be killed if people cannot cast their votes in the December-30 election. “It’s not an election. There’s a reign of terror everywhere. If this situation continues, people will lose their trust in election,” he said while addressing a press conference at his Manikpur village in Companiganj upazila. He, however, said Sheaf of Paddy candidates will come out victorious all over the country if voters can exercise their franchise on the election day. Moudud also claimed that the deployment of the armed forces members could not contribute to improving the situation. He said they will be in the election race till the last moment no matter what happens. “Let the people of the country and the international community see how an election is held under a partisan government. This had been a great opportunity for Awami League to prove that a fair election is possible under a party government.”


Two rival women to contest Faridpur-2 constituency
UNB, Faridpur

A total of four candidates are contesting the Faridpur -2 constituency and among them two key candidates of ruling Awami League and BNP are women. Among them one is elderly Senior Awami League leader Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury another one is young BNP organizing secretary Shama Obayed, who will participate in the electoral race for second time.The atmosphere of polls was on the full swing in the area where candidates were seen campaigning, running on door to door seeking votes. The discussion of election is heard in each tea stalls and shops in the market where people were forecasting the possible outcomes of polls. Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury was first elected as parliament member in 1991 but lost the electoral race in 1996 and 2001 and won again in 2008 when for first time Shama Obayed, daughter of late BNP leader Obaidur Rahman, contested the polls against her. Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury is not seen campaigning due to her illness, but her two sons Shahdab Akbar Chowdhury and Sajid Akbar Chowdhury are doing so for their mother. Shahdab claimed all the development that happened in Nagarkanda and Saltha thanked to Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, and that is why the people of the area stood firmly to see her victory in the election. Flipping the coin, Shama Obayed Islam is stepping door to door to grip votes for sheaf of paddy. Shama Obayed claimed police are arresting her supporters, creating panic among BNP men. BNP supporters are passing their days out of home fearing sporadic arrest. There are 2,86,993 enlisted voters in the constituency while 123 polling stations.


Elderly man found dead
UNB, Jashore

Police recovered the decomposed body of an unidentified man from Bhairab River at Naoapara Ferryghat in Abhoynagar upazila on Wednesday.
Locals spotted the floating body of the elderly man, aged around 60 years and informed the matter to police, said Sub-inspector Harun-or-Rashid of Abhoynagar Police Station.


79 arrested in Satkhira
UNB, Satkhira

Police in special drives arrested 79 people, who are accused in different cases, from eight upazilas of the district from Wednesday evening yesterday morning. Of them, 22 were arrested from Sadar upazila, 11 from Kolaroa upazila, seven from Tala upazila, 10 each from Kaliganj, Debhata and Ashsashuni upazilas, four from Shyamnagar upazila and six from Patkelghata upazila, said Inspector Azam Khan of Special Branch of Satkhira police. Besides, several cases were filed against them.
