The home ministry has opened a ‘law and order coordination cell’ yesterday to coordinate the country’s law and order situation till January 1 next year and to monitor the situation before and after next polls slated for December 30. Additional secretary Md Abu Bakar Siddique is supervising the monitoring cell as its chief.
A number of senior officials of the ranks of joint secretaries and deputy secretaries of the home ministry, representatives from the Bangladesh Police, Bangladesh Coast Guard, Armed Police Battalion (APBN), and ministry employees have been inducted in the cell. They will coordinate the field officials and law enforcement agencies to maintain law and order before and after the national polls.
When contacted, Md Abdul Jalil, the cell spokesperson and the deputy secretary of the Public Security Division of the home ministry, told The Independent yesterday that the field staff were being asked about the prevailing law and order situation. “No officials from the field have informed us about any incident till 2 pm on Thursday,” he said.
“The required mobile numbers and email addresses of field officials have been collected by the monitoring cell for communications, if needed,” he added.
“We will pass on information to our high-ups if we get any
feedback from the field. We’ll then instruct the field officials on the basis of the received directive,” he noted.
Meanwhile, the Cabinet Division yesterday issued an official order, asking 27 officials and employees to attend the office from today (Friday) till December 30 to assist the Election Commission (EC) in holding the national polls successfully.
At least 25,000 military personnel, including about 5,000 members of the naval force, have been deployed as a ‘striking force’ in most upazilas of the country from December 24 to help maintain law and order during the parliamentary election.
Besides the military personnel, 1,016 platoons of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and 40 platoons of the Bangladesh Coast Guard have already been deployed across the country from December 18 and December 21, respectively, for the same purpose.
On the other hand, at least seven lakh members of different law enforcement agencies, including 172,000 members of the Bangladesh Police and 486,000 members of the Bangladesh Ansar, have been deployed.
The public administration ministry has appointed a total of 758 officials of the ranks of senior assistant secretary and the deputy secretary as magistrates to conduct mobile courts during the ensuing parliamentary election.
The government has declared December 30 as a general holiday so that voters can cast their votes without any trouble.
