The Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) authorities have set a target to get more export orders than the previous year in the 24th annual Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF), which will begin from 9 January 2019.

Last year, the expected target of export orders was worth USD 19.46 million. EPB deputy director (finance) Mohammad Abdur Rouf yesterday said, "We expect to receive more exports orders in 2019."

"To provide better services to visitors, we're going to introduce an electronic ticket service," he added. Rouf also said the new service would enable visitors to purchase DITF tickets online by avoiding long queues. "Earlier, we launched a mobile app system to get a bird’s-eye view of the stalls," he added.

“As much as 90 per cent of the total work of the fair has already been completed,” he told The Independent.

The commerce ministry and the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) are jointly organising the fair at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the fair.

Besides, a touch-board called the Digital Experience Centre (DIC) will help the visitors find the stalls and their products, Rouf explained.

A total of 505 stalls and pavilions from home and abroad have already been allotted. Among them, 49 will belong to foreign countries. India, Pakistan, Thailand, Nepal, the UK, the US, Singapore, and many others are participating in the fair. Besides, delegates from Saudi Arabia, Nepal, and Japan will also be there.

The organisers said local companies like Nadia Furniture, RFL and Akij will participate in DITF.  Walton, a local electronic and home appliance manufacturing brand, will set up a beautifully decorated pavilion with different types of products.

Shafiqul Alam, who is in charge of the Walton pavilion, said they will offer products like laptops, mobile phones and eco-friendly LED lights at the fair.

“Last year, we have sold products worth around Tk. 9 crore. We've already got allotment for two pavilions this year,” said Sadia Khan, assistant director of Sanmon Leather Limited.

This year, DITF will also have a theme park. Different species of fish and colourful birds will be displayed there, said the organisers.

In the month-long international fair, several photograph and painting exhibitions will be held at the Bangabandhu Pavilion, showing the early life of the Father of the Nation, said Rouf.

The EPB also plans to showcase the country's history and heritage at the fair.

The organisers said that a cultural programme will be held on the fairground every Thursday.

EPB sources said the authorities have already written to the law enforcement agencies, asking them to ensure tight security by setting up CCTV cameras and deploying multi-tier security, including the Ansar and Village Defense Party members, Bangladesh Police and the Rapid Action Battalion.

On December 1, 1995, DITF began its journey of showcasing exort-quality goods produced in Bangladesh. Since then, the number of visitors to the fair has grown exponentially.

The fair will be open to the public from 10 am to 10 pm every day.
