British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Alison Blake said a total of 5,000 local observers financed by United Kingdom and other countries will oversee 114 pulling centres across the country on election day.
Alison told the journalists after holding separate meetings with Awami League and BNP-led alliance candidates for Sylhet Sadar-1 constituency ahead of the national election.
The high commissioner visited AL candidate AK Abdul Momen at his residence yesterday. Later she met BNP candidate Khandaker Abdul Muktadir at his residence in city.
After meeting BNP candidate Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, the envoy told the journalists that a total 5, 000 observers financed by United Kingdom and other countries will oversee 114 pulling centeres across the country during the day.
The high commissioner said, “We expect that the election would be held in free and fair, peaceful manner and with the participation of all political parties in the country”.
It is important that the voters could cast their votes freely and the leader-activists of all parties can move openly, she added.
“I came here to observe the election campaigns and overall situations in Sylhet ahead of the national election. I want to see the election being held in a festive mood and it has been a nice conversation with Momen,” the British high commissioner told reporters after the meeting with Momen.
Momen said, “The election environment looks festive in Sylhet and we talked about the overall situations regarding the election.”
He also said that he informed the UK envoy about the obstacles he has been facing from the BNP-led opposition during his campaign.
