A police team met Jatiya Oikyafront convener Dr Kamal Hossain at his Motijheel chamber yesterday to review his security. Following the meeting around noon, Kamal, who is also the Gono Fourm president, told journalists that the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) team expressed concern about his safety.
Kamal said the law enforcers would take measures for his security at his house and chamber if needed. “They even said they would provide security with a car as well,” he added. The DMP commissioner was supposed to meet Kamal at his house, but he could not do so because of some other commitment and sent his apologies, the Oikyafront convener said.
Instead, a team of 10-12 police personnel, led by deputy commissioner (Motijheel zone) Anwar Hossain, went to Kamal’s chambers at the Motijheel Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce around 12:30 pm.
On his part, the DC said Kamal expressed satisfaction over the security measures for him taken by the law enforcers. The police team was making inquiries regarding the Gono Forum president’s security as “part of routine work”, he said.
“We came to discuss whether he has any security issues,” he added.
“DMP commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia also talked to Kamal over phone, although he was supposed to meet him,” the DC said.
Meanwhile, Kamal denied using any slang words against the police during a visit to the Election Commission (EC) office on Tuesday.
Kamal had reportedly termed police as “beast” while arguing with election commissioners. “I didn’t mean it,” he said when journalists asked him to clarify his comment against police.
“We hope the police will act as human beings and play a neutral role during the polls. We also praised their activities,” he added.
The Oikyafront leaders had walked out of the meeting in protest of chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda’s “discourteous behaviour”.
Asked whether the election would be held in a fair manner, Kamal said there were some apprehensions. “Our candidates are being arrested and attacked. This is happening in an abnormal manner,” he mentioned.
He also assured journalists that the Oikyafront would stay in the election field till the last moment.
“This is our right, and we will stay in the electoral process till the last moment so that no one can blame us of staying away,” he said. Kamal also said they would monitor the polls results and then decide whether to accept them or not.
When contacted, Oikyafront media chief Dr Mehedi Masud said Kamal did not seek any security protection from the police when the DMP team met him earlier. He also said Kamal had appointed two personal security men five days back.
