BNP-Jamaat conspiring to foil election: AL

Awami League (AL) yesterday blamed the BNP-Jamaat clique for intriguing to let loose violence with help of Pakistani intelligence agency ISI to foil the December 30 elections and accused Oikyafront top leader Dr Kamal Hossian of ‘working as the guardian of those who still believe in Pakistani ideology’.

“BNP-Jamaat is hatching conspiracies to resort to large-scale violence centering the national polls. Intelligence agency ISI is working behind the conspiracies so that people can be killed during the elections and the polls are thwarted,” Awami League joint general secretary Abdur Rahman said.

The AL leader also said that the Jatiya Oikyafront and BNP-Jamaat are making conspiracies over the armed forces. They (BNP-Jamaat) are spreading falsehood about the army as per the ISI prescription, he added.

"Dr Kamal yesterday (Monday) pronounced the name of Yahya Khan who was one of the culprits behind the mass killing of 1971. If Dr Kamal stands in front of a mirror of conscience, he will see himself in the mirror," said Rahman.

Jatiya Oikyafront chief Dr Kamal Hossain on Monday said those who try to deprive people of their voting right are the enemies of independence and successors of Pakistan's Yahya Khan. The AL leader went on saying, “Now, Dr Kamal is not only working as the guardian of those who not only believe in Pakistani ideology but also patronize the killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family, four national leaders, thousands of armed forces offices, including Major Khaled Mosharraf, Colonel Taher, Shafayet Jamil during the Liberation war, killers of 21st August and war criminals including their family members.”

AL Organizing Secretaries Ahmed Hossain and AFM Bahauddin Nasim and Central Executive Council Member Akhtaruzzaman were, among others, present at the press conference.

“We firmly believe that the people will elect Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina as the prime minister for the fourth time, resisting their (BNP’s) conspiracy,” he said.

Abdur Rahman blasted the Oikyafront for carrying out attacks on AL leaders and activists.

BNP-Jamaat is hatching conspiracies to carry out sabotages across the country, including the capital, fearing election debacle, he said, urging the people to give them a befitting reply by casting their votes for ‘boat’, election symbol of AL.

Mentioning that law enforcement agencies, including other forces, work under the Election Commission after declaration of the polls schedule, the AL leader said Dr Kamal is making provocative remarks about law enforcement agencies to create instability in the country.

BNP-Jammat and Oikyofront men are attacking our people and creating violence across the country, alleged the senior AL leader.

“They also attacked, torched the election campaign offices and Awami League and its alliances by conducting violent activities...the recently leaked phone conversations are the proof. We have also been informed that they are planning to carryout violence sensing the certain defeat in the election.”

Meanwhile, AL election steering committee co-chair HT Imam yesterday requested the Election Commission (EC) not to allow nine local agencies for monitoring the upcoming general elections as, what he said, the organisations are allegedly affiliated to BNP-Jamaat.

The organisations are Democracy Watch, Khan Foundation, Light House, Bangladesh Manobadhikar Samonnoy Parishad, Jagarani Chakra Foundation, Nabolok, COAST Trust, Shariatpur Development Society (SDS) and Noakhali Rural Development Society (NRDS).

Imam, also the political affairs adviser to the prime minister, came up with the request while inaugurating a media center set up at the AL’s central office at Bangabandhu Avenue in the city aiming at providing information about the parliamentary elections.

AL leaders Architect Yeafesh Osman, Akhtaruzzaman and Barrister Biplab Barua, cultural personality Ramendu Majumdar, Jatiya Press Club General Secretary Farida Yasmin and Suchinta Foundation Chairman Mohammad A. Arafat were present, among others, on the occasion.

Talking about the USA-based election monitoring agency Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL), Imam said ANFREL’s representative to the Bangladesh chapter Adilur Rahman Shuvro was deputy attorney general during the BNP-Jamaat regime.

He (Shuvro) is directly involved in BNP-Jamaat politics and a member of ANFREL directory board, the AL advisory council member said, adding that however, the EC has given permission to six representatives of the ANFREL for monitoring the polls after scrutinising information.
