Farooki invited as judge to APSA in Brisbane

Renowned filmmaker Mostofa Sarwar Farooki has been invited as the first Bangladeshi judge to the 9th Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA), which will be held in the historic and iconic Brisbane City Hall in Brisbane, Australia on November 26, In addition to Farooki, the rest of the panel includes distinguished director-writer-curator and Beijing Film Academy Professor, Zhang Xianmin (People’s Republic of China), leading figure of Malaysian new wave cinema, writer-director U-Wei Bin Hajisaari, and renowned Russian writer-director Alexei Popogrebsky, alongside the internationally celebrated Iranian actress Negar Javaherian. This marks the first jury representation of Asia Pacific countries Bangladesh, Malaysia and Russia on the APSA international jury. APSA patron and Korean film industry legend Kim Dong-Ho was announced as the 2015 APSA International Jury President. The announcement was made at a joint function of the Motion Picture Association (MPA), the Asia Pacific Screen Academy and the Busan International Film Festival, of which Mr Kim is founder and Honorary Director. Farooki expressed his thoughts on his Facebook page “To be invited as part of the jury, where famous personalities such as Asghar Farhadi, Syham Benegal, Jafar Panahi, Shabana Azmi, David Puttnam once sat, I am not sure whether I am nervous or excited. To judge the best films in the past year will not be an easy task. Films which created massive impacts in Cannes, Venice, Berlin and Locarno film festivals will surely be nominated. To represent Bangladesh in such an immense atmosphere and setting is truly a great feeling.”
