Over 10,000 vehicles ply on the road a day

The 27-kilometer Jhenidah-Barobazaar road, repaired only in last March, is against become a nightmare for vehicular traffic. The condition of the road has turned so bad in such a short period that it exposes the depth of efficiency and corruption in repair work. “It is now a death trap again,” Rana, a truck driver, alleged.  Kamal Mia, another bus driver of a transport company, said the road has been badly damaged due to faulty maintenance and incessant rain causing frequent engine breakdown and suffering to the commuters. “It needs urgent repair for smooth plying of the vehicles. We have to spend one and a half hours to cross only 27 kilometers of distance,” he said.
Roads and Highway office sources said tender of the road on Dhaka-Khulna highway from Jhenidah to Barobazaar was invited on the first week of January, 2015 and repaired in March.  Mohammad Akmal, a pick-up van driver, said around 500 big and small holes have been developed on the road. Water remains stagnated there causes frequent accident. Besides, the drivers are not able to drive their vehicles properly on the risky road, he said adding drivers of passenger busses and other small vehicles maneuver drive in panic due to this torn and uneven road. President of Jhenidah district Bus Minibus Owners Association Md. Rokunuzzaman Ranu said road accidents have increased due to cracks and torn road in Jhenidah. Besides, they are incurring losses due to wear and tear of their vehicles for uneven and damaged road. It needs urgent repair for safe movement of vehicles. Salma Khatun, a non-government worker who lives in Kaliganj town but attend her office is Barobazaar area, said: “One will become physically sick taking a ride on this road.” A micro-bus driver said: “As our vehicles are light we often lose control over their steering and meet accident.” Executive Engineer Md. Rofikul Islam of Jhenidah roads and highway department said due to the rain and pressure of numerous vehicles the condition of the road has become bad again. “A repair work on the road will soon be taken up,” he said.  Nearly 1,000 vehicles ply on the road a day.
