A Dhaka court yesterday sent Jesmin Jahan Nrittya, wife of cricketer Shahadat Hossain, to jail in a case filed for torturing their domestic help.
After a hearing on bail and remand petitions, Metropolitan Magistrate Younus Khan rejected both and ordered her to jail. He also gave permission to police to interrogate her for three days at the jail gate within five working days, said court sources.
Earlier in the afternoon, officer-in-charge of Mirpur Model Police Station and investigation officer of the case Shafiq Ahmed produced Nrittya before the court seeking five days remand while Nrittya’s lawyer advocate Kazi Nazibullah Hiru filed a bail petition.
Kaiyumuzzaman Khan, deputy commissioner of Mirpur Zone, said getting secret information, a police team arrested Nrittya early yesterday from her father’s residence at Malibagh in the capital.
Mahfuza Akhter Happy, 11, the housemaid of Shahadat’s residence, was found lying injured on a road in Sangbadik Colony area at Pallabi of the capital on September 6. She told police and reporters that the couple beat her. Police had found her hand burnt with a hot cooking paddle and injury marks all over her body.
Following the incident, on September 7, a journalist named Kahndkar Mojammel Hossain filed a case against Shahadat and her wife with Mirpur Model Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act - 2000.
Shahadat Hossain and his wife Nritto Shahadat have been on the run since police raided their house on the night of September 6.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) suspended the 29-year-old national team pacer from all forms of cricket last month until the case was resolved.
