Tangail-4 by-election

Lobby for AL ticket heats up

Our Correspondent, Tangail

Campaign by aspirants seeking to contest in Tangail 4-(Kalihati) by-election has gained momentum after the declaration of polls schedule by the Election Commission [EC]. The EC has set October 11 as last date for filing nomination papers for the polls, which will be held on November 10. The scrutiny will be held on October 13 and the nomination paper withdrawal date has been set for October 21. The seat has been declared vacant after former MP Abdul Latif Siddiqui resigned from the post. Earlier he was removed from the post of  minister and party membership for his derogatory remarks about Hajj and Tublig Jamaat. President of KSJL Abdul Kader Siddiqui BU, younger brother of Abdul Latif Siddiqui, aspirants seeking AL ticket and independent candidates have started campaigning to woo voters. Kader Siddiqui has been trying to draw sympathy of the voters by highlighting recent Kalihati tragedy that saw four people gunned down by police. He met the members of the four bereaved families. Local administration had imposed section 144, a law that restricts gathering at Kalihati on Friday when both  Kader Siddiqui and Kalihati AL called meetings at the same venue. However, Kader Siddiqui
held a meeting at a separate venue and criticized the 14-party led government. Warning also came from similar AL meeting that Kader Siddiki would not be allowed to fish in troubled water.  AL leaders have been continuing mass contacts and lobbying for party ticket. President of Kalihati upazila AL and chairman of Kalihati upazila Parishad Mazharul Islam Talukder, ex- chairman of Kalihati upazila Parishad and assistant secretary of central AL sub-committee Hasan Imam Khan Sohel Hazari, vice-chairman of Kalihati upazila Parishad and AL leader Anower Hossain Molla, Director of FBCCI and central AL leader Abu Naser, AL leader Advocate Sabina Yeasmin Ibrahim, ex-diplomat,  Anowarul Alam Shaheed  are notable AL aspirants. Abdul Alim, a businessman of Kalihati, is also active as an independent candidate.
