The Awami League (AL) has urged the Election Commission (EC) and the administration to ensure a level playing field for all parties ahead of the next general election slated to be held on December 30. Talking to the media at the AL president’s Dhanmondi office in the capital yesterday, HT Imam, political adviser to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said: “The EC should ensure a level playing field for all and not just the opposition.”
He alleged that BNP-Jamaat men are resorting to terror tactics across the country as part of their blueprint to foil the upcoming general election. “They (BNP-Jamaat men) are vandalising our election offices set up across the country for poll campaigning almost every other day. Besides, they are also lodging false complaints with the EC,” he said. Imam further alleged that at least five AL leaders and workers were killed and over 250 partymen came under attack from BNP-Jamaat men soon after electioneering began on December 10. Claiming that hundreds of election offices have been vandalised across the country and many houses and shops set ablaze over the past few weeks, Imam said; “Today, I got a phone call from our party candidate Asaduzzaman Nur, who told me that his poll campaigning offices came under attack from BNP-Jamaat men. This is very unfortunate.”
He also told the media the names of AL leaders and workers who were killed by opposition workers in pre-poll violence. The deceased are Yousuf Al Mamun, Mohammad Hanif, Ishaque Hossain, Jamal Uddin and Tofazzal Hossain Mondol. Imam said BNP-Jamaat men had carried out similar attacks on AL workers, as well as the country’s ethnic minority groups, in 2001. “And that’s why I have requested the EC and the administration to take necessary measures to arrest BNP-Jamaat troublemakers immediately to ensure a level playing filed ahead of the December 30 polls,” he added. AL deputy office secretary Biplob Barua and deputy publicity secretary Aminul Islam Amin were present during the press conference.
