BNP resorts to violence to make poll questionable, says HT Imam

BSS, Dhaka

Awami League’s (AL) national election conducting committee co-chairman HT Imam yesterday said the BNP-Jamaat clique has resorted to violence and terrorism to make the parliamentary election questionable under an orchestrated plan.

“The BNP-Jamaat clique carried out attacks and set fire to many Awami League offices across the country. They are now making counter allegations of attacks against them. They are spreading propaganda and falsehood centring the polls” he told a press conference at the AL president’s Dhanmondi political office.

Imam, also an AL advisory council member, said five leaders and workers of their party were killed and 250 others critically wounded in the attacks by the BNP-Jamaat clique ahead of the election. They also carried out vandalism at many Awami League offices across the country, he said.

“The BNP-Jamaat terrorists have hurled crude bombs, petrol bombs and opened fires on Awami League leaders and workers in 24 places in the country. They have also carried out attacks on two police vehicles,” he said.

He urged the Election Commission and the administration to take legal actions against those involved with the incidents.

The AL leader also demanded immediate arrest of the attackers to establish a level-playing field in the election.

Imam said the BNP-Jamaat clique is terrifying the minority community people across the country through subversive acts and sabotages as like as they did during the 2001 election.

He said the people do not want to see patrons of terrorism and militancy in power and that is why, hundreds of BNP leaders and workers have joined AL.

The AL leader expressed his optimism that the people would cast their votes in favour of ‘boat’ symbol in the upcoming election as there is a mass wave in favour of ‘boat’ throughout the country.
