‘BCL men’ attack quota reformists at DU; 4 hurt

Correspondent, DU

At least four leaders of quota reform movement were injured in an attack allegedly by a group of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men on Dhaka University (DU) campus yesterday.

The injured — Bin Yeamin Mollah, Tarek Rahman, Ahmed Kabir, Jashim Uddin Akash and Sohrab Hossain —are all joint conveners of Bangladesh General Students’ Right Protection Council, a platform that spearheaded the quota reform movement. After the attack the BCL allegedly picked up Josim Uddin from Teachers Students Centre (TSC) to an unknown place, but later they freed him after few hours.

Bin Yamin Moll said, “When we went inside the TSC to have lunch around 3pm, a group of BCL men, led by Shahidul Shan, school affairs secretary of Shaheed Serzeant Zahurl Haq Hall unit, and Sohanur Rahman, vice-president of same hall, attacked us without any reason".

“The BCL men hurled abusive words towards us and punched, kicked and slapped us mercilessly, he added.

The victims alleged that all the BCL men are followers of DU unit BCL president Sanjit Chandra Das.

Nurul Haq Nur, convener of the organisation said, "The university administration and law enforcement agencies are not taking any effective measures against them. For this, they are getting more aggressive to do such work. We strongly condemn such terrorist activities of BCL. We will declare programme protesting such attacks”. DU unit BCL general secretary Saddam Hussein said, "We did not get reports of any attack by BCL activists." The quota reformists had a movement on an issue. The general students are confused about why they are continuing the movement after the issue is over.

Asked about the attack, Dhaka University Proctor Prof AKM Golam Rabbani said, "None of the students filed any complaint to me regarding the incident. “But I sent the proctorial team to the spot after information.

DU unit BCL president Sanjit Chandra Das said he was still unaware of the attack and would look into the matter.
