Most foreigners not on govt radar

Almost 20,000 are residing in the country with expired visas

The government does not have proper information on the locations and status of over one-and-a-half lakh foreigners living in Bangladesh at present, according to sources in the police and home ministry.
Moreover, there are many foreign nationals residing illegally in this country without anyone’s knowledge, they added.
The home ministry and police only know about those foreign nationals residing in Gulshan and the diplomatic zone. As a result, security for foreigners has created a new dilemma for police.
Sources said many of the foreign nationals had legal visas, but almost 20,000 were residing in the country with expired visas. In view of this anomaly, the government has ordered the police to collect information of all the foreign nationals under their particular jurisdictions.
Even though the proper number is still missing, police claimed that foreign nationals were safe in the country. The police claim came in the backdrop of the murders of two foreigners—Italian Cesare Tavella and Japanese Kunio Hoshi.
Police further claimed that the two murders were the handiwork of some groups that harboured secret motives of maligning the government. The culprits will be apprehended soon, they added.
A Special Branch official said many of the foreign nationals in the country were diplomatic officials, while some were connected to NGOs and the garments industry. There were also many foreign students in Bangladesh. Most of them live at Gulshan, Banani and Uttara in Dhaka; security has been beefed up in these areas after the two murders.
The official added that they have given a report about the killings to the home ministry and it has also been forwarded to the Prime Minister. According to the primary report, the two incidents were not connected with each other.
He further said that the involvement of ISIS in the killings was a hoax as there was no pertinent proof of their claim. This whole scenario might have been created by the killers themselves to mislead law enforcement agencies, he added.
