At least 25,000 military personnel, including about 5,000 members of the Navy, have been deployed as a ‘striking force’ in most of the upazilas from yesterday to help maintain law and order during the parliamentary polls, which are slated to be held on December 30. About 20,000 military personnel have been deployed in 289 constituencies across the country, according to government sources. Around 5,000 members of the Navy were being deployed from yesterday, the sources said.
At least 64 units of the Bangladesh Army, each headed by a unit commander with the rank of a Lieutenant Colonel, will be deployed to help the civil force. The Army personnel will work in the administrative areas of responsibility (AOR) under the supervision of the 10 Army divisions across the country, the sources added.
Members of the armed forces will start their election duties from today across the country. About 5,000 naval personnel have been deployed in 11 constituencies—Bhila-1, 2, 3 and 4; Cox’s Bazar-2 and 4; Chattogram-3; Noakhali-6; Barguna-1 and 2; and Bagerhat-3—in the coastal areas from yesterday morning.
Each naval contingent, comprising 50 naval personnel and headed by a commander, will help maintain law and order as a ‘striking force’ during the parliamentary election. Depending on the degree of vulnerability, one or two such contingent(s) would be deployed in every upazila during the national polls.
The naval personnel will continue their duties until January 2 next year. Besides the military personnel, 1,016 platoons of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and 40 platoons of the Bangladesh Coast Guard have already been deployed across the country from December 18 and December 21, respectively, for the same purpose.
On the other hand, at least seven lakh members of different law enforcement agencies, including 172,000 police personnel and 486,000 Ansar personnel, have been deployed to conduct the election without any untoward incident. Election commissioner Kabita Khanom told The Independent that the forces have been deployed to hold the ensuing national polls in a peaceful and credible manner. “We want to hold the national polls without any incident,” she said.
According to a circular on election duty, Army personnel will be deployed as a ‘striking force’ for 10 days from December 24 to January 2, 2019. The circular was issued by the Public Security Division of the home ministry on Wednesday. A 15-member law enforcement team, including one policeman and 12 Ansar members, will be deployed at each regular polling centre. Sixteen additional law enforcers would be deployed at each polling centre marked as important, vulnerable and those in the hill tracts and the haor areas during the national polls.
This year, two members of the embedded Ansar, out of the 12-member team, would carry firearms and rest would carry sticks to maintain security at the polling centres.
