International Right to Know Day observed

International Right to Know Day-2015 was observed in the district as elsewhere in the country and the globe yesterday with the commitment to the citizen’s fundamental rights to know information, reports BSS from Gaibandha.
Marking the day, a discussion meeting organized by district administration was held at the auditorium of Zilla Shilpakala Academy with additional deputy commissioner (General) M. Shamsul Azam in the chair. DC M. Abdus Samad addressed the meeting as the chief guest and district information officer Sabiha Akter Lucky and general secretary of the committee of concerned citizens, district unit, formed by Transparency International Bangladesh Jahurul Kaiyum were present as special guests.
The function was also addressed, among others, by trainer on Right to Information (RTI) Act-2009 of Information Commission Sarker M. Shahiduzzaman, coordinator of SKS Foundation Ismail Hossain and chairman of Boali union parishad M. Shahidul Islam Sabu.
The speakers said information is an important tool for empowering people and the Right to know is vital for ensuring accountability and transparency and good governance, institutionalizing democracy and building a corruption free society. DC M. Abdus Samad said RTI is the fundamental and constitutional right of the people and realizing it the present government passed the RTI Act, 2009 prioritizing the right of people to access to information. As RTI Act, 2009 helps ensure free flow of information in the country, the people have got the opportunity to obtain all information from the government offices including non-government ones, he also said.
