PM’s remarks to hamper
probe: BNP

BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday said irresponsible remarks from the government’s top level over the murders of tow foreigners will not only create obstacles to investigations but also turn it difficult to identify the assailants, reports UNB.
In a statement, he demanded the government ensure exemplary punishment of the killers of foreigners after identifying them through a proper probe.
“We strongly condemn the killing of the two foreign citizens by the assailants. Such murders demonstrated that the country’s law and order situation is now in a very bad shape,” he said.
Meanwhile, at a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, party spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon feared that the Prime Minister’s remark that BNP-Jamaat nexus might have a link to the recent killing of two foreigners may influence the investigations into the murders.
“The PM’s remarks that BNP-Jamaat clique might have involvement in the killing of two foreign nationals at a time when the incidents are under investigation is unfortunate and unbecoming,” said BNP spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon.
“She (PM) on one hand is saying the incidents are still under investigation and is linking BNP and other opposition parties with the incident on the other. It’s a regrettable matter.”
The BNP leader said their party wants responsible remarks from the chief of the ruling party.
Right after the end of the Prime Minister’s press conference, Ripon came up with BNP’s reaction to her comments. Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the two foreign nationals have been killed in a planned way and alleged that BNP-Jamaat nexus has a link to the two murders.

“The style of killings of these two foreign nationals are the same, these are planned murders. If you assemble the remark of a BNP leader and the reaction after the killing of Italian national in Gulshan area, the matter will get clear,’ she said while speaking at a press conference at her official residence Ganobhaban.
Ripon said a militant outfit initially claimed the responsibility for the killing of two Italian and Japanese citizens.    He said the Prime Minister herself told reporters at the press conference that a Facebook status was given in the name of IS from Chicago claiming the responsibility for the murder of Italian citizen, but it’s needed to scrutinize whether its true. “We’ve seen different TVs running scrolls IS also claimed responsibility for the killing of Japanese citizen.”
Ripon said it should be investigated with due importance whether the IS has any link to the murders, though the Home Minister assured the country’s citizens and development partners that there is no existence of IS in Bangladesh.  He also urged the government to ensure a prompt investigation into the murders of two foreigners and mete out punishment to the offenders.
Ripon alleged that plainclothes Rab members picked up Rangpur district unit Jubo Dal general secretary Anisur Rahman Lacku and Rangpur city unit BNP leader Rashed-un-Nabi Biplob on Saturday but did not produce them before any court even after expiry of 24 hours. It’s a matter of deep concern.”
Law enforcers are tarnishing their image at home and abroad by indulging in unlawful activities, including making people disappeared, he observed.
The BNP spokesman demanded the law enforcers immediately return the two BNP leaders to their families.
