Leopard beaten dead in Panchagarh

A wild leopard was beaten to death by villagers in presence of police and Forest Department officials beside Pathraj river in Doulotpur of Boda upazila on Saturday.
Ismail Hossain, a resident of Bashuniapara village, said his daughter first spotted the leopard near the river in the noon. Eventually, hundreds of people gathered following her screaming.
Being frightened by the gathering, the leopard took shelter in a nearby bush filled with water spinach. But the villagers started hurling stones toward the animal.
Being informed, policemen from nearby the police station along with members of Forest Department rushed in, but the villagers beat the endanger animal mercilessly and killed it, said Gamiruddin and Nur Islam, residences of the same village.
Moynadighi Union Parishad Chairman Md Abdul Jabber said at least four people sustained minor injuries while trying to have a look at the leopard.
Boda Police Station Officer-in-charge Abu Haider Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman said, “Police did not go to the spot for saving the animal, but to protect the villagers from it and the villagers killed the animal when it tried to get out of the bush in the evening.”
Later, police recovered the body and took it to the police station, said the OC. Boda Upazila Forest Department Officer Anwar Hossain said, “We tried to stop the mob, but failed to save the leopard.”
Meanwhile, the dead leopard was handed over to the forest department, said Boda Upazila Nirbahi Officer Syed Mahmud Hasan.
Firearms seized in C'nawabganj

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered two pistols, three magzines and 14 rounds of bullet from Tarapur field area in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj district at early yesterday.
BGB sources said on secret information, a patrol team of BGB-53 battalion from Masudpur border outpost raided a maize field of the aforesaid area at around 12:30am and recovered the arms and ammunition in an abandoned condition. Later, the recovered arms and ammunition were deposited with Shibganj police station.
One killed in road accident

A fish trader was killed and three others injured in a road accident on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Trishal upazila of Mymensingh yesterday morning.
The deceased was identified as Giasuddin, 40, of chalerghat area in Trishal.
Giasuddin died on the spot and three others were injured when a Mymensingh bound bus hit their CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Bagan area around 11am, said Azizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Trishal Police Station.
The injured were admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
Twin sisters drown in Chandpur

A pair of minor twin sisters drowned in a pond in Farakkabad area in sadar upazial on Saturday noon.
The deceased were identified as Adifa Akhter and Sadia Akhter, both aged one and half years and daughters of Manik Mizi of the same area.
Victim’s uncle Sohag Mizi said the victims were playing in the yard around 12:30 pm and unfortunately one slipped into the pond. In a bid to save her, another sister jumped off and both of them drowned in the pond.
Later, the family members found them floating in the pond and took them to Chandpur General Hospital where doctor Nur-e-Alam declared them dead around 3 pm.
