Shipping minister Shahjahan Khan yesterday said the government has undertaken a survey work titled ‘ecological balance of four rivers’ to stop pollution in the rivers in and around the capital, saying it would take two years to finish the task, reports BSS.
“We have taken a number of steps in a coordinated way to prevent river pollution during the period,” he said while speaking at an inter-ministerial meeting at shipping ministry.
The rivers are the Buriganga, the Shitalakhya, the Balu and the Turag. The survey work would help protecting the environment and promoting historical and cultural tourism.
Among others, Narayanganj city mayor Dr Selina Hayat Ivy, water resources secretary Dr Jafar Ahmed Khan, shipping secretary Shafiq Alam Mehedi, and RAJUK chairman GM Joynal Abedin Bhuiyan attended the meeting.
