Letters to the editor

Better late than never

Sir,
At long last, we are going to add important value addition to sundry kitchen and household waste that will be used, as a fuel for power generation. This power plant was long overdue, and this writer has written on this important matter on a number of times earlier. We should and must give top priority for this project, and progress it expeditiously without let or any hindrance.
The most important and unique aspect of this project will be the, collection, sorting and transport of the waste, from the city dump to the power plant site. This will involve the local municipalities as well as the local waste dump management. Close cooperation of the two city municipalities in the sorting, handling and transport of the waste will be totally a local based endeavor that will need the maximum local initiative and mobilization and training of the waste collectors at the city waste dumping site.
In a sense this is the potential critical and weak link in the chain. For the plant and technology France is the accepted source, as they have built similar power plant that has been running for possibly over a decade near Paris in France. They could be involved on this project right from the beginning.
These are usually a duel fueled power plant, with natural gas or liquid fuel supplying around fifty to sixty percent of the fuel, and the balance coming from household waste. We should give high priority and all importance to successfully implement this project, and see that it does not linger from proposal to reality on the ground, as well as during its gestation and trial running since it involves a different and important format for the fuel management system, that needs to be established and maintained.
All in all, it is an important step in the right direction, taken by our government and it deserves our appreciation. This writer wishes the project 'god luck and good execution' from start to operation.

Reduction of unemployment
Sir,
Unemployment in Bangladesh has been a serious problem particularly for the
educated youths.
Lately, students are more prone to acquire science and business related education, which are more suitable for jobs. Despite that those graduates are frustrated with the burden of education as there is concurrent occurrence of joblessness. However the prevalent dilemma of employability appears as there are imbalances due to expected skills by the employers.
Generally the growth in rapid labour force is considered to derive from two main sources; the demographic transition resulting in surge of youthful entrants into labour market and the sharp increase in participation of trained peop[le in the labour force.
The rate of growth in unemployed population is higher than employed population which might create extra pressure in the labour market.
Furthermore, employment generation of government should include sustained productivity and output growth across all economic sectors; deeper and more focused government attention to enhancing workers skills, particularly by strengthening the higher education and making them more responsive towards markets needs; improve rural local government to facilitate urban to rural migration and continuous emphasis on gender empowerment.
